Plyometrics for Basketball and Explosive Jumping Power

Add explosive power in your basketball jumping skills and let your game go up another notch. Basketball might be the top sport on everybody's mind where an explosive power can be the key for victory. 100 meter dash and football can compete but Plyometrics for Basketballin those sports, explosive power is only utilized in a short period of time. This fact is not true in the case of basketball. In basketball, lack of explosive power even in a short while will put the other team in momentum where the team lacking in power might not recover for the rest of the game resulting in defeat.

In plyometrics for basketball, there is a series of explosive drills that helps add height to the vertical leaps of the basketball players. It will not only help you reach the rim of the ring or add more height to your dunk bit also improve your overall game. This includes making a difficult pass, doing stunt dribbles and powering your hoops. All of this is possible because plyometrics improves not only the vertical leap but also your reflexes, coordination and balance as well.

The whole thing works in this manner; plyometrics convert stored energy (together with gravity and/or weights) into your movements quickly. It eventually allows your body to learn this behavior and develop “muscle memory”. You see, this exercise is not just about developing your muscles so it stands out, it is more about delivering a strong force in a short space of time.

Obviously, in order to achieve your goal in enhancing your vertical leap, you have to do exercises that include jumping. You can try other types of exercise but no exercise will be as effective and as direct to your desired result as jumping. This can be your leverage in order to reach the rim of the ring or even perform a slam dunk.

Plyometric exercise drills that help you boost your jumps include doing vertical leaps as high as you possibly can. You can try placing a box in front of you, or any other platform where you can jump on. Jump on this box or platform giving the most explosive power you can put in it. Take extra precaution and do not even attempt to jump from the box unto the floor. There is a high probability that this will cause you damage to your knees. Step off the box back to the floor. Then repeat the whole process over again.

There is also another type of plyometric for basketball exercise drill that is beneficial when it comes to basketball jumping. Go on ahead and try doing squat jumps. Some sports junkies might identify with squat jumps. For those who do not, here is how it is done. Bend your knees and position your body so that the angle of your thighs to your shins should not be less than 90 degrees. Hold this position, and then explode up into a jump as high as possible. Land in the original position you were in and then just repeat these steps.
