The Top 10 Dunkers of All Time (part 1)
One thing which is sure to always be controversial is deciding which player was the illest dunker of all time. Here’s a list of the top 10 (in my opinion) as well as some of their secrets which you may wish to consider when trying to increase your own vert.
10. Clyde Drexler: Clyde the Glyde became famous for his athletic, graceful dunks as a member of the University of Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma squad and in the NBA on the Portland Trailblazers and Houston Rockets. Clyde Drexler described himself as a “chubby preteen who was too slow, couldn’t jump and was always picked last on my playground in Houston.” However at age 12 he began practicing martial arts which helped him to develop the discipline and muscular strength in his legs which would be critical later in his career.
9. Jason Richardson: back to back winner of the Slam Dunk Contest in 2002 and 2003, Richardson is regarded as one of the most prolific dunkers in the NBA during the last 10 years. Most people don’t realise he was also a great ice hockey player before focusing on basketball in college and built quad and hamstring strength skating on the ice.
8. Spud Webb: the 5’7 wonder, his 360 degree dunk in the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest to defeat defending champion and teammate Dominique Wilkins will go down in basketball legend as one of the greatest slams of all time. Spud grew up in a poor neighbourhood in Dallas, Texas and used basketball as his inspiration to get out of poverty. His quickness and unbelievable hops were the result of some pretty spectacular genetics and hard work in the offseason to make up for his small stature.
7. Lebron James: there may not be a more exciting player in the game today and one of the main reasons for this is his gravity defying, thunderous dunks. Lebron James’s workout includes squats, the Box Jump using dumbbells and skipping rope as well as simple push-ups and pull-ups for increased upper body strength and endurance.
6. Dr. J: Julius Irving wasn’t called the “father of dunk” for no reason! Dr. J was a trailblazer of the dunk, particularly on the fast break, who inspired future generations of skywalkers. His “Rock the Baby” dunk over Michael Cooper in the Sixers 1983 Championship against the Lakers is still regarded as one of most iconic dunks of all time. Dr. J was leading his teams to victory since playing for the Salvation Army at age ten however as an ABA and NBA star he conditioned himself by running up and down arena stairs. You may not have access to arena stairs but you can replicate the Doctor’s leg boosting workout by running up and down the stairs in your local multi-story building!
