The Top 10 in-game dunks of all time (part 1)
Forget the hot dogging that occurs during All Star weekend, the best dunks of all time happen in games against opponents playing D where the money is on the line. In this 2 part series we’re going to have a look at the 10 best in-game dunks of all time!
Startting with number 10 and working towards No 1 dunk of all time.
10. In 1984 the Suns 6’10 Larry Nance, nicknamed the High-Ayatola of Slamola” and winner of that years Dunk Contest drove baseline and dunked over Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The dunk is amazing because Nance must be a good 2 feet over the rim before dunking on Kareem!
9. In similar fashion, in 1989 Suns center Tom Chambers goes over Knicks Rookie of the Year Mark Jackson off a fast break outlet from Kevin Johnson. Not the prettiest dunk in the world, its spectacular for 2 reasons: the altitude Chambers achieves (he is actually eye level with the rim!) and his glorious, flowing mullet which he rocked without shame for his entire career! (which ended in 1998 NOT 1988!).
8. The Rim Breakers: in 1979 the 76ers center, nicknamed “Chocolate Thunder” threw down such a thunderous dunk against the Kansas City Kings that the backboard shattered into thousands of pieces, sending Kings power forward ducking for cover. Because of the danger, not to mention the cost of replacing a backboard, the NBA would rule that breaking a backboard was a violation which would result in a fine and suspension. During the following season the NBA made the rims “unbreakable” and thought that they would never have to deal with the problem again – and they didn’t for 20 years. But then in 1993 a 7’1, 325 lbs. rookie who had made a name for himself shattering rims at Louisiana State University came along and made the NBA engineers rework their calculations. Shaquille O’Neil didn’t shatter the rim, he brought down the entire hoop, shattering its support systems and almost knocked himself out with the clock!
7. Chris Webber schooled one of the all-time greats Charles Barkley in a play which then went on to be immortalized in a Nike Commercial. Introducing the future NBA hall-of-famer to a move he had made famous as a Michigan Wolverine C-Webb shifted the ball around behind his back on a fast break and dunked it on Sir Charles’s head. According to Webber, Barkley who had famously stated that he “was not a role model” admitted to the Chris that he was in fact his role model!
6. New York Knick shooting guard John Starks had a long time feud with the Chicago Bulls, in particular with Michael Jordan. While Jordan always had the last laugh, knocking the Knicks out of the playoffs in 4 consecutive playoffs, in Game 2 of the 1993 Conference Finals Stark dished out revenge with a play which became known as “the Dunk” in the Big Apple. In the last 3 minutes of the game Starks drove by BJ Armstrong’s off a Ewing pick-and-roll then drove baseline and dunked over Horace Grant and Michael Jordan with a monster left hand jam, putting the Knicks up 2-0 in the series (they would go on to lose 4 consecutive games).
Make sure and check out Part 2 which will list the top 5 dunks of all time. Remember that 2 years before “the Dunk” John Starks was bagging groceries in his local supermarket so with dedication and determination anything is possible!
